Climate
Compared to other modes of transport, air transport already internalises a large measure of externalised costs in the environmental sector. For a long time, airlines have been obliged to pay emission-based charges for noise and pollutant emissions. This finances clean-up and protection measures. In the area of climate protection, air transport was the first industry in the world to adopt a binding global instrument (CORSIA) through the World Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), which will compensate for the expected increase in CO2 emissions from 2020.
