Dear members

AEROSUISSE can look back on a successful year. Politically, 2024 was also a good year. The budget discussions were concluded in such a way that no reduction in funding was made in favour of SAF projects.

On behalf of the entire AEROSUISSE board, I would like to thank you for your cooperation and wish you and your loved ones a happy holiday season and a good start into 2025.

Thomas Hurter, National Councillor, and chairman of AEROSUISSE

Revision of the Aviation Act is appreciated

AEROSUISSE supports the revision of the Aviation Act. In this context, it is important that the currently applicable operating hours of the national airports of Geneva and Zurich are protected. Switzerland as a business location needs these operating hours to ensure that it remains connected to the global economy. In its statement, AEROSUISSE emphasises that even minor restrictions in terms of time will result in the wave system (short transfer and attractive departure times), which is absolutely crucial for the hub function, no longer functioning. It is therefore necessary to ensure that there will be no further restrictions in the future.

Subsidies for SAF with new CO2 law

For AEROSUISSE, the key to CO2-neutral aviation lies in the use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). However, the new legal requirements, such as the SAF blending obligation – which will apply in the EU from 2025 but later in Switzerland – will lead to additional costs totalling several millions. That is why Swiss aviation also relies on the financial commitment of the federal government to promote the production of SAF with federal funding, in addition to the industry's investments.

In its statement on the new CO2 law, AEROSUISSE requests that the Federal Council's austerity package to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in aviation should not be accompanied by a reduction in funding. This was successfully implemented.

Wolf in sheep's clothing: environmental responsibility initiative

On 9 February 2025, the young Greens' environmental responsibility initiative (popular initiative “For a responsible economy within our planet's limits”) will be put to the vote. The Federal Council, National Council and Council of States reject the extreme initiative without a counterproposal. It calls for a drastic reduction in resource consumption and pollutant emissions within ten years. If it were to be adopted, it would result in a massive loss of prosperity and far-reaching state intervention in society and business. It would affect mobility, nutrition, and housing. Instead of a utopian solo effort, AEROSUISSE is convinced that the path taken should be pursued and expanded through international cooperation. We therefore recommend that you educate the voters in your private and professional environment about this extreme initiative.
